Enhanced functionality improves access to information; simplifies research process

ANN ARBOR, Mich., June 14, 2002 -- ProQuest Company's (NYSE: PQE) Information and Learning division has announced the new features that will debut in its upcoming version of its ProQuest® online information service. ProQuest 6.0 is scheduled to launch on July 28, 2002.
The new ProQuest 6.0 interface will include enhanced tools and features for linking, extensive coverage date information, a new title list system, French and German user interfaces, and other improved functionality based on customer feedback.
A new feature, the ProQuest CrossLinksTM Local Holdings Administrator, provides a convenient method to set up and maintain links from ProQuest holdings to other full-text resources, such as ejournals, aggregator databases, and SFX, as well as to library OPAC systems. (ProQuest has supported Open URL linking since its ProQuest 4.1 release in January 2001, when CrossLinks was originally introduced.) Predefined links are provided for popular services such as SFX and linking partners including Swets Blackwell, Ingenta, OCLC, Academic Press, and the American Institute of Physics. Additionally, ProQuest customers can create custom predefined links to their library's various electronic resources.
Other new ProQuest 6.0 features include:
- Expanded coverage date information -- Users get more extensive information on publication coverage dates on the Publication Search, List Publications, and Collections/View Titles screens. Dates of full-text and citation/abstract coverage are displayed, as well as any embargo information and coverage gaps for each title.
- French and German interfaces -- In addition to English and Spanish, the ProQuest interface is now also available in German and French. All interfaces provide navigation, thesaurus, topic finder trees, and online help in the local language. In addition, the ProQuest Training Resource Center now includes Quick Print Guides and online lessons in each of the languages.
- Local language content for Spanish, French, and German -- New publications in German, French, and Spanish are being added to ProQuest databases.
- New title list system -- Available on the ProQuest Information and Learning website (www.il.proquest.com), the new title list system allows customers to view and download enhanced title lists for ProQuest products. Enhancements include additional formats (including Excel), indication of any embargoes, summary reports, and more.
- Browse Lists enhancements -- Enhancements to the Browse Lists feature make it easier to browse and search for index terms, including subjects, companies, people, and places. To further focus the search, the Narrow Term feature provides a list of index terms related to the search topic.
- Topic Finder enhancement -- The layout for the topic trees in the Topic Finder feature now more clearly illustrates the structure of the tree, allowing for easier topic navigation.
- Professional Research Collections (third-party databases) enhancements -- An enhanced interface fully supports ADA accessibility requirements; an option to select a preferred default search mode; a new online Help system provides context-sensitive assistance from any screen and includes an index, glossary, and the ability to search within the online Help contents for topics.
- Citation exporting -- ProQuest 6.0 allows direct exportation of citations of selected articles in ProQuest to bibliographic management software applications such as ProCite®, EndNote®, Reference Manager®, and RefWorks®.
- Recent Searches -- A new Recent Search page allows users to more easily combine multiple searches.
- One-click printing -- ProQuest 6.0 offers the ability to display an article in a print-friendly format and automatically invoke the browser print function.
