ProQuest Launches Online Guide to Expand Researcher Access to Terrorism: An International Resource File
Divided line

ANN ARBOR, Mich., January 20, 2006 - ProQuest Information and Learning announces the launch of an online guide for Terrorism: An International Resource File, a vital collection of hard-to-find primary resource documents. This electronic companion tool increases the ease of access to all the rare material in this microfiche collection, which also has a multi-volume print index and companion bibliography. Published by ProQuest's UMI®: unit, this unique collection brings together three decades of select documents examining the escalation of global terror and its historical, sociological, psychological, medical, political, economic, scientific, and legal aspects.

“Terrorism: An International Resource File is a unique and invaluable resource for scholars in a variety of fields concerned with the unfolding legacy of global terrorism,” says Robert Lee, director of publishing.  “The topic of terrorism is more pertinent than ever, and this collection provides a rich and relevant research base of enhanced access to prime sources.”

The complete collection of Terrorism: An International Resource File includes the online guide, over 1,700 select documents on microfiche, seven print indexes and a comprehensive bibliography covering three decades of primary sources on terrorism (1970 to 1990).  The indexes and cross-searchable online guide are tools for working with the microfiche collection, and the bibliography spans the entire period covered by the collection and also includes relevant citations to more broadly accessible sources not chosen for inclusion in the microfiche.  The collection is thoroughly indexed and each document is discoverable by author, title, subject, geographic area, as well as document type.

Terrorism:  An International Resource File provides a wide overview of important primary resources – including policy statements, position papers, lectures, reports, newsletters, conference proceedings, broadcasts, manuals, and other material drawn from a number of governmental, non-governmental, and intergovernmental sources. The set covers a time period that saw escalating terrorist acts, including:

  • The use of commercial airlines as a terrorist tool (Lockerbie crash; many hijackings)
  • The hostage situation that led to tragedy at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich
  • The Iranhostage situation that lasted from 1979 to 1981
  • The phenomenon of the Unabomber
  • Terrorist activities in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Asia, and Africa.

The collection was created under the editorial oversight of Dr. Yonah Alexander, who established the first terrorism study center in the United Statesand is a nationally and internationally recognized expert. An author and editor of over 30 books on terrorism, Dr. Alexander was formerly the Director of the Institute for Studies in International Terrorism at the State University of New York and is associated with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the U.S. Global Strategy Council, and the Institute of Socialand Behavioral Pathology.

Terrorism: An International Resource File can be purchased in its entirety (print indexes; online index; and all fiche) or as subsets as needed. Print Indexes are available separately, as well as fiche for various date ranges.  This collection is just one of the UMI products providing research into terrorism and political violence.
