ProQuest Licenses Its Renowned Taxonomy to Convera
RetrievalWare products offer industry-specific ProQuest content modules Divided line

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 19, 2004 - ProQuest Information and Learning announces a licensing agreement with Convera to use ProQuest's renowned taxonomy, a system for organizing information in electronic content. ProQuest Information and Learning, a unit of ProQuest Company, creates and distributes databases to libraries and educational institutions worldwide.

“ProQuest’s taxonomy expertise, coupled with RetrievalWare’s proven technology is certain to add significant value for Convera’s clients,” said Ken Kirkley, Director of Corporate Licensing for ProQuest.

Convera, based in Vienna, VA, is a leading provider of search solutions. The new agreement allows Convera to use ProQuest’s taxonomy to classify and organize information in its proprietary RetrievalWare software products.  RetrievalWare solutions provide highly scalable, fast, accurate and secure searches across more than 200 forms of text, video, image and audio information, in more than 45 languages.

ProQuest’s taxonomy allows for the precise mapping and searching of subject fields. It is constantly updated to capture new terms that allow a common language for describing key topics.

The taxonomy, created by an editorial team, is the basis of ProQuest’s highly regarded indexing and abstracting services, considered essential research tools by librarians and scholars worldwide.

Convera is offering industry-specific cartridges, based on slices of the ProQuest taxonomy, to plug into RetrievalWare. Convera also offers software licenses for the cartridges, based on ProQuest content, to RetrievalWare users. RetrievalWare's advanced classification solution enables organizations to discover links, knowledge and expertise embedded within otherwise diverse and scattered information sources.
