ProQuest Film Indexes Online Unites AFI Catalog and Film Index International
New portal allows cross-searching of both film resources Divided line

ANN ARBOR, Mich., January 9, 2004 - ProQuest Information and Learning has launched Film Indexes Online, a new portal for subscribers to the AFI Catalog and Film Index International. It was created in partnership with two distinguished film research organizations, the American Film Institute and the British Film Institute. ProQuest Information and Learning creates and publishes databases for libraries and educational institutions worldwide.

Film Indexes Online brings the two products together and provides unparalleled, cross-searchable access to information on American and international films from over 170 countries since 1900.  Because both indexes are updated twice each year, the portal reflects the most up-to-date film research available.

The AFI Catalog, compiled by film experts and researchers at the American Film Institute, presents a detailed view of American feature films produced during the last century up to 1970. AFI Catalog offers an unmatched level of detail, with full production and cast information, extensive plot summaries and production notes.  In its latest release, new content and features include:

  • More content from the 1950s and many existing film records updated
  • Quick Search box and Advanced Search screen
  • AFI’s top Films 2000 – 2002
  • About this Site area with improved help and FAQs
  • Webmaster for questions about the product

Developed by the British Film Institute, Film Index International gives full international coverage of films and film personalities from over 170 countries, up to the present day. All eras of film-making are covered - from the early silent movies to recent box-office hits. Based on the British Film Institute's Summary of Information on Film and Television (SIFT) database, Film Index International is both inclusive and authoritative.

Film Indexes Online can be used to cross-search both FII and AFI Catalog or to search the individual databases separately.  Usage statistics will be available by resource or in total.  Film Index International and AFI Catalog will continue to be available as stand-alone products.

Free trials are available.  Libraries may receive more information by contacting their account representative at 1-800-521-0600, ext. 3183 or 3452 (outside the U.S., call +44-1-223-215-512) or pqsales@il.proquest.com.  Editors may call 1-800-521-0600, ext. 6489 or email pr@il.proquest.com.
