ANN ARBOR, Mich., October 29, 2003 - ProQuest Information and Learning will link abstract and index records from its online databases with the full text of the highly regarded scholarly journals in Project MUSE. Project MUSE is a collection of 220 peer-reviewed scholarly journals from 36 publishers in humanities and social sciences managed by The Johns Hopkins University Press in cooperation with the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. The distribution agreement brings links to the full text of journals in Project MUSE to ProQuest® online databases, including Literature Online, PCI-Full Text, International Index to Music Periodicals and International Index to Performing Arts. ProQuest Information and Learning, a unit of ProQuest Company, creates and distributes databases for libraries and educational institutions worldwide. Project MUSE offers its journals online by subscription to educational institutions. The two services have agreed to provide links between their databases for institutions that subscribe to both services. "Students and faculty using Project MUSE will benefit tremendously from links between the journals in Project MUSE and ProQuest's high-quality content in the humanities and social sciences," said Aileen McHugh, Director of Electronic Publishing, The Johns Hopkins University Press. "This linking agreement will enrich the online experience of users in the humanities and social science, who are often frustrated with the lack of online material in these areas." Included are key titles such as Language, American Literature, Callaloo, American Literary History, PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art, The Opera Quarterly, Shakespeare Quarterly, TDR/The Drama Review, Victorian Studies, and Modern Fiction Studies. "We are excited to be able to link our content to the high quality scholarly content offered by Project Muse. Linking provides the user with the best alternative to get at exactly the right full-text content to meet their needs. We are committed to helping our customers link between the scholarly content in our databases and content that they own, wherever it resides" said Mary Sauer-Games, Director of Publishing for ProQuest. Implementation will begin soon. Customers of both ProQuest and Project MUSE can sign up for the ProQuest specialized email notification lists at: http://www.proquest.com/en-US/site/forms/mailinglist.shtml to receive notification when the links are added. ProQuest supports OpenURL linking for both inbound and outbound links. Flexibility characterizes ProQuest's outbound linking capabilities, enabling support even for link targets that are not yet OpenURL compliant. ProQuest has established linking agreements with several key providers such as JSTOR, Swets, Ingenta, OCLC, and more. ProQuest supports linking via CrossRef which enable access to content for more than 200 publishers.
